Week 4 Future
In my personal career past I have been working in the restaurant industry as a server and bartender for many years. Working as an intern for Kennedy Design Build is my first actual real experience in the construction and design field. I plan on using my degree in urban planning and urban metropolitan studies to help the community in which I live be more environmental friendly and sustainable. My whole future will be focusing on green building and strong community/urban planning. My experiences so far here out at the Thunderbird site have been very insightful, I have been learning so much about LEED and the different stages of construction and restoration. The Tower that we are working on will be finished by the end of the year, I would love to work again with Kennedy Design Build on any other projects that come there way in the future. I would love to start my own business one day using green build and sustainable practices while also incorporating the wonderful world on design. There is not one thing that I dislike about the site, it is a wonderful project, beautiful campus, and I truly am working with a great crew and mentor. Skills that I have been brushing up on include my computer and writing skills. I have be preparing alot of documentation work to be submitted for the Untied States Green Building Council to approve and certify our project. I would absolutely consider working in an educational setting, I love learning and would help inspire others.

WEEK 3 Green Building, Sustainability, City Beautiful Movement and Urbanization
I have studied urban metropolitan studies and urban planning during my time at Arizona State University. The following four concepts were studied in dept and I will never forget. I am currently applying each one someway in my life and will continue to practice green building, sustainability, city beautiful movement, and urbanization in the future.
The city beautiful movement was a great concept that we studied in several of my classes, basically it is a reform movement that flourished in the 1890s and 1900s in urban planning and North American architecture. The bases of the movement are using monumental grandeur and beautification when building and restoring our cities. The city beautiful movement is very important for the community and the people. We explored the city beautiful a lot in my urban metropolitan studies classes. At my Thunderbird Tower project I can see how they are using beautification practices during construction and design, they want the Tower to be beautiful because it is the centerpiece of the school. Many students and faculty meet and hangout there, meetings will occur, and the building will be used for so many various reasons.
Green building is a major concept that is creating waves in the world of construction and architecture, basically the practice of building or creating structures only under environmentally friendly processes. The main goals of green building are siting and structure efficiency, energy efficiency, materials efficiency, water efficiency, indoor environmental quality enhancement, operations and maintenance optimization and waste reduction. I truly believe that green building is the way of the future and I am glad the Thunderbird Tower is renovating their tower to make it a green building. I am personally working on documenting everything for the LEED certification; it is a lot of work but in the end when the project is complete and certified green I will be very proud.
Sustainability involves every living and non-living system in the world and is basically the capacity to endure. Protecting natural ecosystems and putting effort in changing destructive ways of living are crucial. In my urban planning classes we discussed sustainability in great depth. The concept is very important and I believe that we as a community and nation we can work to improve our current ways of living, make our cities and environments more sustainable and less destructive the planet Earth. Out at Thunderbird a large number of the materials being used in construction are recycled materials, the building itself will be energy efficient and sustainable. Everything from the paint that will be on the walls to the wood that was used in framing is a product the environmentally friendly.
Urbanization is the actual physical growth of urban cities and areas. Many more people are leaving life in the rural areas to find work and live in big cities. Global change is the direct cause of urbanization and now we are seeing less population living on farms and in villages and more population living in the congested urban areas. This would not be a terrible thing if all of our cities were ecofriendly, green, and sustainable however we are a long way from that. We covered the urbanization and it’s after math effects a lot in my urban metropolitan studies classes, and I personally have lived in big cities my whole life so it hits close to home. Out at Thunderbird School of Global Management we are also working on two buildings that are dorms, I thought the urbanization would fit right in since we are experiencing it first hand at the campus. It is an International Business School and people come from all over the world to live in the city of Phoenix and to study at Thunderbird.

Week 2
My internship is with Kennedy Design Build who is contracted out to work on the Thunderbird Tower Project out on Thunderbird School of Global Management’s campus. The project also has a project director, Will Counts who oversees every detail in every phase of construction and renovation of the tower. Drewett and brenden is the architecture group working on the project along with Kennedy Design and Will. For an actual construction site everyone and everything is extremely organized and we are even ahead of schedule. Will Counts, my supervisor and I all have offices out on the actual site at Thunderbird campus and drewett and brenden have their offices in downtown Phoenix. Communication plays a major role in helping every team and department in the loop and organized with current events happening on the project. I would say that the multidisciplinary concepts best fits my internship, the company, and the project. There are so many different things going on daily, everyone is assigned to complete and make sure it was done safe and right. Not only is Kennedy Design Build, Thunderbird School of Global Management also hired the general contractors to renovate two dorm halls which totals 56 rooms and 28 bathrooms, as well as 6 classrooms. Because of the amount of work and different duties that are out on the site and still left to complete, we have people doing all sorts of tasks. There is a lot going on however it is very exciting to be apart of something that you can watch be built, developed, and then finally used by students knowing that it is a completely sustainable and green building.

Introduction BIS 401
Hello, My name is Jenny Wolff and I am studying Urban Metropolitan Studies and Urban Planning and Development as my concentrations for the BIS degree. I love construction, green building, sustainability, and community. I chose to go into the field of urban planning for those reasons and many more. My internship is with Kennedy Design Build which are general contractors and I am helping the company with the LEED certification on the Thunderbird Tower Restoration Project. The project is out on Thunderbird School of Global Management's campus and we are restoring an old air craft tower that was built in 1941. We are also making the tower a green building and LEED certified. It truly is an amazing project and I am so lucky to be a part of it. I hope to gain as much experience and knowledge from this experience as possible, I know that my personal education working with the LEED certification will increase as well as heavy duty construction and development. Throughout my courses at ASU, I have been learning about green building, sustainability, LEED, and other aspects of city and community development. Currently at Thunderbird I am responsible for putting together all of the documentation needed to have the tower be accredited for LEED points, I have never done anything so intense but look forward to the task at hand. After graduation I plan on continuing my work helping the community and making our country a greener place. I would love to land a full time job, however the market and economy for construction, development, and city planning is not soaring in Phoenix now, but I have hope. I would love to move to the pacific coast and or northwest, cities like Portland, San Francisco, and Seattle fascinate me. Community planning and green building is absolutely without a doubt what I will spend my life and future doing and improving.
